Feature Guide
What every tool does — and the why behind it. Search for anything, like “weight,” “food,” or “map.”
Trip Builder
WHAT IT DOES
Tell us roughly where and when — even just "somewhere wooded within three hours, nothing steep" — and we'll draft the whole trip: a day-by-day route with a real trailhead and driving directions, the gear you're missing with honest prices, and food scheduled meal by meal. Backpacking or camping.
WHY IT MATTERS
Most of the app in one step. You review each part and keep what you want — the route, the pack, the shopping list — and nothing is saved until you say so. Every plan tells you what to confirm before you go.
Next Trek
WHAT IT DOES
The screen you open on the day: how long until you leave, directions to the trailhead, the day-by-day route, what your pack weighs, how far through your checklist you are — and the button to check in safe when you're back.
WHY IT MATTERS
Trip Safety is where you set the safety net up — this is where you use it. Everything you need on the day in one place, without hunting through four screens.
Gear Locker
WHAT IT DOES
Your master list of every piece of gear you own, tagged by category with its weight (and an optional price). Edit an item and you can also say whose it is — yours, a kid's, or shared.
WHY IT MATTERS
You can't lighten what you can't see. One saved closet means you never re-enter gear, and every other tool builds on it. Marking who owns what is what stops the packing split guessing: without it, "the kids carry their own gear" has to be inferred from the category, and your boots and a child's are both just Clothing.
Wish List
WHAT IT DOES
Gear you want but don't own yet — with an estimated price, a link to the thing itself, and how badly you want it. When it arrives, one tap moves it into your Gear Locker or camping kit.
WHY IT MATTERS
Kept deliberately outside the closet, so a want never counts toward your base weight or shows up in Bag Check. It's the difference between what you have and what you're saving for.
Smart Add
WHAT IT DOES
Snap a photo of gear on a scale, or paste a link, and we fill in the name and weight for you.
WHY IT MATTERS
Typing forty items in one at a time is where most gear lists die. This is the fast door into your Gear Locker.
Import Gear
WHAT IT DOES
Already keep your gear in a spreadsheet? Bring in an Excel or CSV file, or paste rows from Numbers or Google Sheets, and it lands in your Gear Locker or Camping Closet with weights and categories.
WHY IT MATTERS
Years of gear lists shouldn't have to be retyped. Bring what you already have and start from there.
What each pack is worth
WHAT IT DOES
Every pack you've built, side by side — total weight and total value in one table, plus what your whole closet is worth. It's a section inside Pack Insights.
WHY IT MATTERS
The fastest way to see what a summer kit really costs you against a winter one, without adding up two lists by hand. It sits under the single-pack breakdown because that's the order you'd ask the questions in: what's in this pack, then how does it compare.
Base Weight Builder
WHAT IT DOES
Pick a target base weight and it builds a full gear list to hit it, making the lighter-vs-heavier calls for you.
WHY IT MATTERS
Base weight is the number you actually control. Working backward from a target is the fastest way to a lighter pack.
Packing Assistant
WHAT IT DOES
Packing end to end. Pick a trip you've already planned (or just describe one), say who's going and whether you're cooking, and get a list drawn from your closet, from new gear, or a mix of both — your kit plus suggestions only for the gaps. Then it splits the load: choose a pack and it suggests who carries what, with worn gear left out, group gear on the adults, and everyone filled to their own share rather than an equal one.
WHY IT MATTERS
Forgetting the one thing that matters is how trips go sideways, and a trip-specific list beats a generic one every time. Whether you're cooking is the one thing no trip description reveals, and it decides a whole category — stove, fuel, pot, windscreen, lighter — all in or all out. The split solves the other half: dividing a pile of gear by item count looks fair and often isn't, and the person who ends up with the tent, the stove and the water is carrying a third of it. Add someone's body weight and it'll tell you when a share is too big for them — a nine-year-old's ceiling is a tenth of their weight, not a fifth.
Bag Check
WHAT IT DOES
Compares your packing list against the essentials and flags what's missing.
WHY IT MATTERS
A second set of eyes before you leave. Catching a missing layer at home beats discovering it on the trail.
Pack Insights
WHAT IT DOES
Visualizes where your weight actually lives — by category, by item, and your heaviest offenders.
WHY IT MATTERS
You'll cut more weight from a few big items than from many small ones. This shows you where to look first.
Meal Plan
WHAT IT DOES
Breakfast, lunch and dinner for each day, in one grid you fill in as you think of things. No trip, no group, no dates required.
WHY IT MATTERS
It feeds your shopping list, so what you planned to cook and what you need to buy stay in the same place — and an empty slot is a question you can still answer.
Trail Food
WHAT IT DOES
AI meal ideas matched to your trip length, dietary needs, and taste — add them straight to a bag and save favorites. Meals you drop into a pack are read by the Packing Assistant, so it won't suggest food twice.
WHY IT MATTERS
Food is often the heaviest, most personal part of your pack. Planning it deliberately saves weight and keeps you fueled.
Shopping List
WHAT IT DOES
One running list for everything you need to pick up — food, fuel, and campsite supplies — tagged by store or category so you can shop by aisle or by stop. Send trail-food ideas straight to it, and push any item into a gear bag with a weight when you want it to count toward your pack.
WHY IT MATTERS
What you forget at the store is what you miss at camp. One shared list — synced across your Gear Locker, Camping Closet, and the Shopping List page — means what you plan is what you pack.
Adaptive Outdoors Assistant
WHAT IT DOES
Personalized gear and planning advice for your body, abilities, and specific needs.
WHY IT MATTERS
The outdoors is for everyone. Generic advice assumes a standard hiker — this adapts to you.
Pack Order Assistant
WHAT IT DOES
Shows how to load your bag step by step — what goes on the bottom, in the middle, up top, and in the pockets.
WHY IT MATTERS
A well-ordered pack carries lighter than it weighs. Balance and quick access mean comfier miles and less digging.
Trail Name Generator
WHAT IT DOES
Generates a trail name that fits you — random, or AI-personalized to your story.
WHY IT MATTERS
Trail culture is part of the fun. A name that's yours makes the community feel like home.
Pet Pack
WHAT IT DOES
A separate gear closet for your trail dog — track what they carry and check they've got everything for each trip. Add their weight and it'll tell you whether the pack is a reasonable share for them.
WHY IT MATTERS
Your pet has a base weight too. The usual guidance is 10–15% of body weight for a healthy adult dog — tighter than a person's — and puppies shouldn't carry a pack at all while their growth plates are open. Their gear lives in its own closet, so nothing of yours can end up on them.
Weight Trend
WHAT IT DOES
Logs your pack weight over time so you can watch your progress on a chart.
WHY IT MATTERS
Going lighter is a long game. Seeing the trend keeps you motivated — and honest.
Ten Essentials
WHAT IT DOES
The ten things that should be in every pack, ticked off as you go. The standard list, saved between trips.
WHY IT MATTERS
The same forgettable items get forgotten every time. Ten Essentials makes 'did I pack it?' a solved problem.
Camping Checklist
WHAT IT DOES
A free, no-signup checklist for car, family, and base camping — pick your trip type and party size and it reshapes to match.
WHY IT MATTERS
Pulling up to a campsite is a different game than the backcountry. Weight doesn't matter; forgetting the chairs, cooler, or kids' gear does.
Camping Closet
WHAT IT DOES
All your camping gear in one place, organized by camp system. Make a plan for each trip, tick what's coming, then tick it again as you load the car. Bring gear over from backpacking, the checklist or a spreadsheet, or let AI packing pick from what you own.
WHY IT MATTERS
The free checklist saves on one device. Your Camping Closet syncs to your account, keeps a separate list for every trip, and remembers who usually brings what.
Training Log
WHAT IT DOES
Set a training plan for a trail, log your sessions (including a live GPS tracker), and watch a readiness ring fill toward 100% as your trip gets closer. On iPhone you can pull in workouts you already recorded from Apple Health instead of typing them — you tick which ones count. During a live session the app can also nudge you to drink at a distance you pick.
WHY IT MATTERS
The trail doesn't care how you feel on day one. Training on purpose — and seeing your progress — is how a big hike stops being intimidating. And a walk you already did should not have to be typed in twice.
Track a Session
WHAT IT DOES
Record a training walk by GPS — distance, pace and elevation, live on your lock screen. It files into your Training Log when you save it.
WHY IT MATTERS
The walk you just did is the most accurate thing you can log. Recording it means no guessing at the mileage afterward.
Maps
WHAT IT DOES
Free USGS topo maps with your live location, trail search, and offline downloads. Search a place or 'Trails near here' to find trails, tap one to draw it, then Follow it for live on-trail guidance (distance to the end, % done, and off-trail warnings). Missing a trail? Add it yourself by drawing it on the map or recording it as you walk.
WHY IT MATTERS
The map is where a plan becomes a hike. Key-free topo, your position, and trails you can follow — plus the ability to fill in trails the base map is missing — mean you're never guessing where you are or where the path goes.
Trails Nearby
WHAT IT DOES
Hiking trails, paths and trailheads around you, measured to the trail itself rather than to a dot in the middle of it — then opened straight on the map.
WHY IT MATTERS
Most trail lists sort by distance to a bounding-box centre, which buries long trails that pass right by you. This one measures to real geometry, so the trail at the end of your road actually shows up.
Long Trail Directory
WHAT IT DOES
The long trails — length, states, seasons, permits and section breakdowns — with the year each figure was published, so you know when to check it.
WHY IT MATTERS
Mileages move. The AT was 2,197.4 in 2025 and 2,197.9 in 2026, and the ATC says the total changes most years. A length with no date on it is one people trust forever.
Weather & Storm Alerts
WHAT IT DOES
Live National Weather Service conditions for where you are, plus a proximity alert that warns you when severe weather (storms, lightning) is within a distance you choose, with an optional phone notification.
WHY IT MATTERS
Weather turns a good day dangerous fast. A heads-up while a storm is still miles out is the difference between getting off the ridge in time and getting caught on it.
Track Back
WHAT IT DOES
Records a breadcrumb trail as you hike out, then guides you back along it — all offline, using GPS with no signal or map tiles needed.
WHY IT MATTERS
Getting turned around is how day hikes become emergencies. A retrace-your-steps trail you recorded yourself works anywhere, even with zero bars.
Trip Safety
WHAT IT DOES
Log where you're going and when you'll be back, share it with an emergency contact, and mark yourself 'back safe' on return. Add your contact's email and we'll reach out for you: if you haven't checked in 90 minutes past your return time, we email them your plan and push everyone who joined the trip. Compass Club members can add up to four more people to that email. You can also print two sheets: a leave-behind for someone you trust, and a dashboard card for the windscreen that shows only your due-back time and a number to call — no names, no route.
WHY IT MATTERS
The single most effective safety step in the backcountry is someone knowing your plan and your return time. A reminder on your own phone is no use if that phone is dead, out of signal, or in a pocket you can't reach — so the alert doesn't depend on it. Once per trip, and never emergency services: it asks your contact to try reaching you. The two printed sheets are for two different readers, which is why the car one leaves almost everything out.
Itinerary
WHAT IT DOES
Build a day-by-day plan for a trip — stops, mileage, and notes in one place.
WHY IT MATTERS
A vague 'we'll figure it out' plan is how you run out of daylight. A real itinerary keeps a multi-day trip on pace.
Trip Review
WHAT IT DOES
A record of the trips you've taken — distance, dates, and the gear you carried, saved for next time.
WHY IT MATTERS
Your own history is the best planning tool you have. What worked last time is the shortcut to packing right this time.
Hike Log
WHAT IT DOES
Day hikes kept separate from your backpacking trips — trail, distance, elevation and time.
WHY IT MATTERS
A three-mile after-work walk and a four-day traverse aren't the same thing, and mixing them makes both records useless. Two logs, honest numbers in each.
Badges
WHAT IT DOES
Milestones you've actually earned — miles walked, nights out, trips logged, gear dialled in.
WHY IT MATTERS
Progress is hard to feel when it's spread over a year. Badges are the receipt for work you've already done.
Field Skills Library
WHAT IT DOES
First aid, Leave No Trace, bear and wildlife safety, knots, campfire and stove skills, and navigation — written plainly and saved in the app.
WHY IT MATTERS
Signal is worst exactly where these matter most, so none of it needs a connection. Read it at home, review it at the trailhead. It is not a substitute for hands-on training, and the first aid guide says so.
Forge's Camping Closet
WHAT IT DOES
A look inside a real, dialed-in car-camping closet — every item, grouped the way it is actually packed.
WHY IT MATTERS
Starting a camping list from nothing is the hard part. Seeing a finished one is faster than any checklist, and you can copy what fits and ignore the rest.
Trail Sky
WHAT IT DOES
Point your phone at the sky and it names what you're aiming at — stars, planets, the Moon and its phase, and the constellation around them. Tap anything for its distance, colour and type. Search by name, or browse whichever of the 88 constellations are above your horizon right now.
WHY IT MATTERS
The whole star catalogue lives in the app, so it works with no signal at all — which is exactly where the sky is worth looking at. Distances only appear when the underlying measurement is trustworthy; beyond a few hundred light years it says nothing rather than guessing.
Camping Trips
WHAT IT DOES
Plan a car-camping trip with other people: who's coming, who brings what, meals for the weekend, and a packing list built from your camping closet. Share one link and everyone can add themselves, claim a job, and put their allergies in their own words — no account needed on their end.
WHY IT MATTERS
Group camping falls apart in the group chat. One board everyone can see means two people don't both bring the stove, and nobody finds out about the peanut allergy at dinner.
Thru-Hiker Corner
WHAT IT DOES
For a hike measured in weeks: log each day's miles and where you slept, plan resupply boxes and town stops, track permits and your budget, and watch your position move along the trail. Share a link so people back home can follow along.
WHY IT MATTERS
A thru-hike is a different kind of trip — the questions are resupply, permits, money and pace, not base weight. This is the screen that answers those.
My Vehicles
WHAT IT DOES
Save the vehicles you drive to trailheads — make, colour, plate and a photo — so a Trip Plan or a Find Me page can say exactly which car at the trailhead is yours.
WHY IT MATTERS
"A silver SUV" is not a description anyone can act on in a full car park. The right details, saved once, ready to attach to the plan you leave behind.
Camp Games
WHAT IT DOES
Things to do at camp — around the fire, out in the trees, in the tent while it rains, and the quiet twenty minutes before sleep. Filter by how many of you there are, whether you need any gear, and whether it'll wake the next site. Save the ones that work.
WHY IT MATTERS
The evening is the part of a trip nobody plans for, and restless kids at dusk is a problem you can't solve from a signal-less campsite. Saved in the app, filtered by what you can actually play right now.
Health & Med Reminders
WHAT IT DOES
Schedule reminders for your own meds and your trail dog's — dosages and times you won't have to remember on the trail.
WHY IT MATTERS
A missed dose at home is a nuisance; a missed dose three days into the backcountry can end a trip. Reminders travel with you.
